College

I feel like everyone else is starting their lives before I start mine. Everyone is already buying furniture and decor for their new apartments while I’ll still be living at home. Sure, next year I’ll get to do the same when I transfer, but I’m longing for the feeling of independence right now. I want to live in a cozy little apartment where I can read books in my cozy little reading corner while I wait on my tea to finish steeping. I want to be able to go to the farmers market and buy my own groceries and then cook my own little meals. I want to be a free spirit and start doing things in my own step and to my own drum.

I suppose there are perks to staying at home for a while. I’ll get in another year of the family bonding and family feuds that I’ll miss dearly when I’m moved out. I’ll be much closer to my boyfriend, who’s just now in his senior year of high school. I’ll save a lot of money on housing, food, appliances and other things.. But while everyone has started their adult lives, I’ll still be living my same old life.

I really don’t know why I’m in such a hurry to grow up, I really don’t. I think the idea of independence intrigues me. I hope living alone in an apartment next year will be all warm and cozy like I’ve imagined. I hope total independence is cupcakes and dandelions rather than sad and lonely.

But even so, every now and then I would feel a violent stab of loneliness. The very water I drink, the very air I breathe, would feel like long, sharp needles. The pages of a book in my hands would take on the threatening metallic gleam of razor blades. I could hear the roots of loneliness creeping through me when the world was hushed at four o’clock in the morning.
